As it's my 1st time ever visit to Hawaii, I didn't do any island hopping. So my thoughts are purely based on my experience in Honolulu. It's very expensive for peak season, hotel rates are more like Maldives level, and there're a lot of Japanese tourists. Interestingly it seems to attract all kinds of Japanese tourist, whether it's family, newly wed, pensions and even groups of girls and lads. My only guess is the Japanese tour operators have very good rates in Hawaii. If you will have a JCB credit card, a Japanese credit card, you're in luck! You got free rides on the Pink line trolley! The Pink line is focused on shopping routes. What I like about Hawaii is it's much safer than mainland states, and it becomes more like Vegas at night. Apparently September is the low season to visit.
